In 2022, Vijay Kumar, Play for Peace Certified Trainer facilitated workshops at Lighthouse, a not-for-profit organisation in Mumbai that connects working professionals and college students with children from under resourced communities, through one-on-one mentoring in a safe environment. He worked with many young people using Play for Peace activities. Among them was Kajal—a bright and determined girl from an underserved community in India, whose journey of resilience and transformation is truly inspiring.

Overcoming Life’s Challenges

Kajal's life had been filled with hardships. Her father passed away when she was very young, leaving her mother to work as a housemaid to support the family. Her elder brother took on small jobs, selling car polish at a petrol pump to help make ends meet. Despite these struggles, Kajal remained eager to learn and grow.

A New Way of Learning

At Lighthouse, Kajal was introduced to Play for Peace games, an experience unlike any she had before. Through these activities, she not only had fun but also developed confidence, teamwork skills, and a sense of belonging. Learning became engaging and interactive, opening doors to new possibilities.

Discovering a Dream

One day, I asked Kajal, “What is your dream?” She hesitated before admitting, “I have never thought about it. But I know that I want to study. I also want to help girls like me—those who want to achieve something but are held back due to economic and social challenges.”

Through continued participation in Play for Peace, Kajal started engaging more with children in her community, playing with them, and even joining me in facilitating sessions. Slowly, her perspective changed, and she began to believe in bigger dreams. One day, she expressed a new aspiration: “I want to study at a big university that works in the development sector.”

Turning Dreams into Reality

Determined to pursue her goal, Kajal applied for a master’s program at Azim Premji University in Bengaluru. She prepared for the entrance exam with dedication, giving it her best effort. When the results came in, she had not only secured admission but also received a 100% scholarship! She became the first person from her community to achieve such an incredible milestone.

The Power of Play for Peace

Reflecting on her journey, Kajal often says, “If Play for Peace had not been a part of my life, reaching this stage would have been impossible.” Her story is a testament to the power of play, mentorship, and perseverance in transforming lives.

Kajal’s journey is an inspiration to many. It proves that with support, encouragement, and opportunities, even the most challenging circumstances can be overcome. Play for Peace continues to empower young individuals like Kajal, helping them dream beyond their limitations and achieve their true potential.
