This past weekend, something special took root in Pasadena. Our certified trainer, roundtable, and council member, Chaun, spent two days with Outward Bound Adventures (OBA)—the nation’s oldest nonprofit dedicated to outdoor education for BIPOC youth.

For more than 60 years, OBA has pioneered Transformational Experiential Environmental Education (TEEE), empowering young people to see themselves and their environment in new ways. Their mission to connect youth with nature and leadership is deeply aligned with our own—and this training marked the beginning of an inspiring new partnership between OBA and Play for Peace.

A Weekend of Learning and Connection

OBA

Chaun guided a diverse group of outdoor educators and youth from the Los Angeles area, introducing Play for Peace games, activities, and facilitation practices. The room was alive with energy and laughter as participants reflected on how these tools could support their work—especially during a time when youth in Los Angeles are navigating significant challenges and changes.

💬 “This experience was transformational for everyone, even us facilitators. Alumni, staff, and youth came together for the first time with a shared purpose. The youth thrived, speaking openly and exploring new ideas. Chaun’s creativity, presence, and ability to read the room made the experience truly unforgettable.” — Brandon Fuller, Program Manager / DOLI Director, OBA

One highlight of the weekend was planting the seed for a new Play for Peace Club at John Muir High School in Pasadena as well as embedding Play for Peace activities within the programs and processes that OBA run all year. With OBA’s support, young people will have a safe and welcoming space to gather regularly, play together, and build peace within their school and community.

It was powerful to witness youth and staff working side by side, sharing their backgrounds, embracing their differences, and finding common ground. The diversity and openness of the group reflected OBA’s strength as an organization and created a foundation for meaningful, long-term impact.

A Partnership with Promise

As the weekend wrapped up, it was clear that this was more than just a training. It was the start of a partnership that blends OBA’s deep roots in outdoor and environmental education with Play for Peace’s unique approach to connection, compassion, and cooperation.

Together, we are planting seeds that will continue to grow, cultivating joy, resilience, and peace for young people in California and beyond.

This is just the beginning.
