Happy Human Rights Day!

"Upholding human rights is in the interest of all. Respect for human rights advances well-being for every individual, stability for every society, and harmony for our interconnected world" -- United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon

Human rights, something that should be fundamental to everyone, are being threatened each day in different parts of the world. To acknowledge our common humanity, December 10 has become the Human Rights Day every year since the United Nations General Assembly passed resolution 423 (V) in 1950, inviting all States and interested organizations to observe Human Rights Day annually in the support and promotion of human rights. Every year on December 10, nations and organizations around the world celebrate Human Rights Day with meetings and events where people exchange ideas and experiences about human rights. A different theme is advocated each year and this year’s Human Rights Day theme is to encourage people to “stand up for someone’s rights today.” Today also marks the close of the Compassion Games Giving Games. Our clubs around the world have been busy participating in Compassion Games activities. Believing that human beings have a remarkable capacity and desire to be compassionate and generous, the Giving Games commenced on November 29, Giving Tuesday, and completes today with a Global Wopida. This Wopida will be led by Chief Arvol Looking Horse, Chief Phil, and Faith Spotted Eagle, and brings together indigenous communities, youth, interfaith leaders, and intergenerational allies to honor the blessings of life, light the spirit of giving, and support water protectors at Sacred Sites such as Standing Rock in North Dakota and around the world. Our own Sarah Gough will be a guest speaker on the Compassion Games telesummit, which begins at 11 am EST and can be accessed here. Stand up for someone’s rights today – let’s adore human rights on Human Rights Day and continue the promotion of human rights every day!
