Can Play Heal Trauma?
In a world shaken by conflict from Gaza to Ukraine, from Sudan to Myanmar, millions of children are waking up each day to a landscape marked by fear, displacement, and grief. While the headlines focus on devastation, there’s another story unfolding quietly but powerfully, one of healing, resilience, and hope. And it all begins with play.
At Play for Peace, we’ve seen something extraordinary: that even in the most conflict-affected communities, play is not a luxury, it’s a lifeline. It becomes a bridge back to trust, safety, and belonging. It becomes a child’s first step toward recovering from trauma.
Why Play Matters in Conflict Zones
For a child, war tears apart the very foundations of life: safety, routine, and connection. The trauma is invisible but deep, manifesting as anxiety, isolation, or aggression. But through trauma-informed play and peace education programs, children are discovering a path to emotional healing that words alone can’t unlock.
Play for Peace works with youth in high conflict zones like Afghanistan, India, and Guatemala, where our trained facilitators create safe spaces for children to express emotion, form friendships, and reclaim their joy. This isn’t just inclusive play, it’s experiential learning for peace that allows children to process pain without pressure.
And the best part? It’s working.
🇱🇰 Case Study: Healing and Rebuilding in Post-War Sri Lanka

In 2025, Play for Peace returned to Sri Lanka—once a battleground of ethnic civil war—to revisit communities we’ve worked with since 2005. What we witnessed was remarkable.
In the hills of Kandy, where distrust once ran deep, Tamil and Sinhalese youth are now playing side-by-side. Games like “Trust Walk” and “Circle of Connection” have become more than activities—they're tools for conflict resolution, empathy, and forgiveness.
“We were strangers,” said Tharaka, a local youth leader. “Now, we are brothers. Play helped us feel safe again.”
These youth are more than survivors, they’re youth peacebuilders. And they are modeling what true reconciliation looks like for the rest of the world.
A Global Movement Fueled by Community
What started as small circles of laughter in post-war regions has now grown into a global peace education movement. From peace facilitator training in the West Bank to youth empowerment programs in India and the Philippines, Play for Peace is proving that joyful connection can transform trauma into strength.
We’re not just playing—we’re building a more peaceful world, one community at a time.
