Community Walk for Peace 2026
On September 19, 2026, something remarkable happened.
Across six US cities and a dozen countries, people stepped outside, gathered their neighbors, their children, their friends, and they walked. For peace. Together. And in more than one place, nobody had even planned for it, the walk just happened, because people wanted to go.
That is the Community Walk for Peace 2026. And it was more beautiful than we hoped.
Across the US: Cities That Showed Up
The energy on the ground in the United States was electric. From the East Coast to the West Coast, communities came out in full force, bringing family members, neighbors, and friends who had never heard of Play for Peace® before and left talking about it.
In Westminster, Maryland, Alex Obriecht led a one-mile walk through the city, followed by Play for Peace® cooperative play activities — and generous community members offered matching donations up to $5,000, doubling every dollar raised that day.
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania brought walkers to the Cynwyd Heritage Trail, meeting at Bala Cynwyd Park before heading out together along one of the region's most beloved paths.
Swedesboro, New Jersey made it a party. Bill Berault hosted a pickleball day complete with Philly pretzels, wristbands, swag, Play for Peace® cooperative activities, and teamwork challenges. Proof that walking for peace can also mean laughing for peace.
In Austin, Texas, The Shift Foundation hosted a walk rooted in their conviction that peace is something we practice, not simply something we hope for. Their message to participants: when communities around the world take that step on the same day, it becomes a powerful expression of our shared humanity.
And in Humboldt County, California, Scott LaChance led a walk in the Redwoods — one of the most fitting settings imaginable for a day about peace, presence, and connection with the world around us.
Altogether, approximately 76 people joined the US walks, bringing their families, their neighborhoods, and their friends into a movement that was happening simultaneously on the other side of the world.
Across the Globe: A Movement That Moved Itself
Internationally, the Community Walk for Peace 2026 had 13 walks registered across the Play for Peace® global network. One was cancelled due to unexpected circumstances. And then two more walks happened spontaneously on the same day, unplanned, unannounced, simply because people in those communities wanted to walk.
That brought the total to 14.
Close to 400 people walked for peace globally, with children at the heart of 65 to 70 percent of every gathering. What the world's most complicated geographies had in common on September 19 was this: people choosing to move together.
125 People in One Line at Kakuma
The number that has stayed with everyone on the team is 125.
At Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya, one of the world's largest refugee camps, 125 people walked side by side in one line for peace. Children and young people. Women and men. Refugees and host-community members. People with disabilities. All of them, together. All of them, moving in the same direction.
In a separate walk also in Kenya, 50 participants split into five teams named Joy, Love, Peace, Kindness, and Hard Work. They spent the day on community clean-up, farmwork, hiking, and play. The walk became a full day of action, of caring for the land and for each other.
The Moments Nobody Planned For
Some of the most joyful details from this year's walk came from the unexpected ones.
A community member in the Philippines missed the official briefing entirely, so she went on her own quiet walk for peace and sent us a photo. A host in Burundi made sure every member of his group was fed and cared for after the walk ended. Hosts in India completed their walks on World Social Justice Day, anchoring the event to something even larger than itself.
And two walks that were never on the calendar simply happened, because the people who wanted to walk did not wait for permission.
That is what it looks like when something has genuinely taken root.
Reports Still Coming In
The Community Walk for Peace 2026 is not yet fully counted. Reports are still arriving from Sri Lanka, Vietnam, and Israel. A photo and video gallery is being built. The final numbers are still forming.
What is already visible is this: on one day, in six US cities and communities across Kenya, Burundi, the Philippines, India, and beyond, people of every age and background chose to walk together. Close to 500 people in total, when the US and global walks are combined. Most of them children. All of them, for peace.
See You Next Year!
This was the first Community Walk for Peace at this scale. It will not be the last.
To every host who said yes, every walker who showed up, every child who ran ahead on the trail, every neighbor who came because a friend invited them: thank you. You are the reason this works.
We are already looking forward to 2027. More cities. More countries. More walks that nobody planned for, because the movement is alive enough to start itself.
